Artefacts in UCD and Task Analysis

The classic text on UCD is Norman and Draper’s User Centered System Design (1986). The authors make it clear that UCD is multidisciplinary and involves elements from “computer science, psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, anthropology, and sociology – the cognitive sciences” (p. 2) and that UCD is “about the design of computers, […] from the user’s point of view” (ibid). In UCD, the analyst aims to document and understand the variety of artefacts used by people as part of their jobs. These can include interactive technologies and the ordinary everyday paraphernalia which fill the workplace ranging from standard forms, date stamps, barcode readers, different coloured pens, staplers, folders, Post-It® notes, checklists, telephones, in and out trays, wall charts, manuals and, so course, the language used between co-workers are of interest too. As we can see, in a typical office, this can be a long list. At the risk of doing task analysts an injustice we can regard the initial analysis and scoping phases of UCD as sharing many of the same objectives, methods and thinking as task analysis proper. So we may regard UCD and TA in the same (conceptual) breath with respect to their treatment of artefacts.
